How to Fix Microsoft SurfaceBook 2 OBS Black Screen Capture

There is a wonderful program named OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) that can be used for streaming various cameras and desktop inputs. I have recently started recording tutorials on various topics. However, I could only record on my SurfaceBook 2 when I disabled the discreet GPU via UEFI. This is not ideal because there are some applications that I use that require the GPU, and if I forgot to set it back on, I would need to reboot and turn the GPU on. After the 2nd time, it gets old quickly.

Here are two tricks to try if your screen capture is black in OBS.

NVidia Control Panel

Right-click on your desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel

Once the control panel opens, click on Manage 3D settings.
In drop down 1, select OBS – if it does not appear, click on Add and browse to the directory where OBS is installed.
In drop down 2, select Integrated graphics, then click on Apply.

Now open OBS. If it works, GREAT! Otherwise, proceed to the next section.

Windows Graphics Settings

On my SurfaceBook 2, I had to do the steps below.

  1. Go to Settings by clicking on Start, then on the Gear.
  2. In the options, select System.
  3. Select Display, go to the bottom of the display settings, and select Graphics Settings.
  4. Click on Browse and find the OBS executable, and click on Add.
  5. Click on the OBS Studio icon and select Power Savings, and save.

Now when you open OBS, the screen capture will work.

Here’s a video on making the changes.
